Just a friendly reminder that possibly the best hip hop record of the year is now in stores. Prodigy of Mobb Deep’s and the Alchemist’s mixtape slash epic war story is quite literally the best thing in Hip Hop since Illmatic. It shares some striking parallels to Nas’s defining debut, although Prodigy (and Havoc) have already made their indeliable mark on hip hop consciousness. This is the record you wish Nas made.Â
Prodigy merges a natural cadence that at first comes of as a hennesey fueled freestyle that on reup’s reflects an intense attention to the rhythm of Alchemists sample heavy beats. In short, this is P’s shit.  It’d be anybody’s shit. But when it comes to beats, Bandana P has good fucking taste.Â
Laden with straight gangsterism and coming across as more alien to the uninitiated than the usual pop tripe, Return of the Mac is as much John Woo as it is Scarface. In fact, the simple mention of Hard Boiled in “Mac 10 Handles” is a bold statement in terms of the evolution of cinematic hip hop. Its nihilistic, snarling and every bit as hard edged as you want out of a fucking gangster hip hop record… and at the same fucking time, its the most musical gangster hip hop record you’ve ever heard since Illmatic.
Available on Itunes and the Zune musicstore. Peep that shit.
